Matt Phillips

b.1976

Recent work portrays buildings woven with human narrative. There are hints of people behind walls, outside the frame of the painting, or an emotional echo from an abandoned building. Often the people are physically absent, but there’s a tangible sense of life and time to my paintings. Ultimately, my work explores the human condition and moments within lives.

I have UK/US dual nationality, born in the UK to American parents. Many childhood summers were spent in New Mexico visiting grandparents, where I fell in love with the barren deserts and small-town architecture. My identity is reflected in my work, I love to paint on crowded British streets as well as creating work in remote desert towns. I have a studio in North London.

Painting mostly in oils, I also weld metal, and sculpt with wood, plaster and clay. Alongside my paintings of buildings are a series of 3D landscapes, blending aspects of abstraction with realism. I also enjoy portrait painting.

My work has been shown in the UK, US, Middle East and is held in private and public collections.

In my studio, a converted garage, 2023. Yes, I know where everything is.
